Queerness is Madness…

#Article: Psychiatric Morbidity Associated with Same-Sex Sexual Behaviour…(Lichtenstein, et al.) in Psychological Medicine (2010), 40, 315-324

It’s been creeping round the back door for quite a while, but now some researchers (like the dudes in this article) are coming out loud and proud to pronounce that yup, gay is mad. Independent of everything else, so they say, there is something intrinsically faulty about same-sex attracted people that makes us more vulnerable to mental disorder. The research priority now is to find that shared gene (you bet it’s called the mad fag gene, or MF for short) and treat it with monkey gland injections or whatever the latest scientific sorcery is nowadays. Sounds fantastic, except of course for the logic gaps in this latest $2 effort to link gayness to madness. The biggest gap of all, must I say it again, is that scientists have yet to prove the existence of one mental disorder (or illness, as they choose to call them). So how can you seek to establish a genetic, positive association betwen gayness and madness when there is no conclusive evidence for a genetic basis to madness? Me thinks this is like trying to tie a duck to a dog and then expecting the whole crazy pile of junk to fly to the moon. Meanwhile, out in suburbia, GLBTI people must wonder why scientists as well as religious fundamentalists have this manic desire to discover our ‘sickness’ and eradicate it without hesitation.
