Over the Top Descriptions of Mentally Disordered People…
You might discern a pattern, whereby mentally disordered people are discussed as if they are always lemmings on the ledge, about to jump (see link, below). The pure, emotive schtick of such imagery guarantees that all but the most erudite souls will succumb to this $2 blackmail and shout: ‘do whatever it takes to keep these poor bastards safe!”. And so in 2010, the solution becomes more doctors, more hospital beds, even though we all know that this is a super high cost, super low outcome strategy. But does anyone really care? Always banging on about the extreme edge of a (thankfully) small subset of people who are mentally unwell carries with it the risk of boy who cried wolf. And, if psychiatry were not so supra accountability, reasonable people might reasonably ask: what did you do and did it work? To date, the answer to the aforementioned questions is ‘not much’ and ‘no, maybe, some time soon’…
