Australia Says ‘No’ to Masculinity…
Margo Saunders has pondered what difference will the new men’s health policy make for men in Australia (see link, below). I’ve been pondering that difference too, particularly as this is a policy that purposefully excludes any conversations about masculinity. You see, the authors of this new men’s health policy think that men in Australia ‘just are’, and that many of the problems that now befall us are because women have upset the equilibrium through their grandiose claims for equality. Traditionalists, biological determinists, yearners for the good old days and bigots one and all, this is not progressive policy but revisionist ideology at its downright nastiest. If put into practice, it will make men much sicker, not healthier, and promulgate even more violence for men and their significant others. And despite any pretences to cultural sensitivity, this policy is doggedly 1950s white male archetype. Egad, we all knew what a man was back then and he was rough, tough and would stomp ya’ head in for just looking at him sideways…
