Women Wearing Pants Causes Crisis
That odd binary dualism, that women’s gains are men’s losses, has gained much currency, me thinks, ever since Susan Faludi’s ‘Backlash…’ was published in 1991. Some men and more especially, those commentators who none too cleverly dress up their misogyny as a ‘crisis’ in masculinity, cling to the rickety view that women stepping into the public domain have left men in some creepy liminal state. From Nairobi, as in this newspaper article (see link, below), to New York, men have warped from being oppressor to oppressed, beaten down into the ground if perhaps, their female partner is better educated, higher paid and more immaculately dressed than they are. Egad, women are not responsible for the maladies that now beset men. We have pretty much done that to ourselves. Through the tainted vision of hegemonic masculinity, we either fail or choose to ignore the ugly truth that we have been suckered into the ‘real man’ myth, with all its attendant baggage. So when trying to be that real man almost kills us, who do we blame? Yup. Women.
